Dreaming Too Big About Your Ideal Client is Killing Your Website Copy

How perfecting your dream client and niche is vital to improving your web copy.

When it comes to defining your ideal client, most people think bigger is better!!! But spoiler alert: that’s a one-way ticket to the most boring, forgettable copy imaginable (seriously, just kiss your actual ideal clients goodbye when you’ve got bland website copy!) 🙃 If you’re trying to appeal to everyone, your message is getting lost in a sea of options—and it’s not doing you (or your sales $$$) any favors.

To ACTUALLY connect with your dreamiest clients, you need to shrink your audience to focus down. Like way down. Yeah, I’m serious, you’re still probably not even thinking small enough. So let’s break down why getting hyper-specific is the key to killer website copy—and how you can do it.

P.S. Wanna know what Zoolander and your ideal client have in common? Read on to find out ⬇️

The Problem: Your “Dream Client” Straight-Up Boring

If someone asks you who your dream clients are, and you answer something vague like “moms” or “small business owners”, CONGRATS because you’ve officially blended in with every other website out there (that was your goal, right? Blending in with the crowd??!). The truth is, broad niches = boring niches. When you’re too generic, your website copy fails to connect because it doesn’t actually resonate with anyone on a deep level.

Instead of making your ideal client say “Holy shit, this is ME!!!”, your website is just background noise. And when people don’t feel seen, they don’t stick around (and the definitely don’t spend money 😴).

So, how do you fix it? It’s easier than you think. Let’s SUPER ZOOM IN and get ridiculously specific about who tf you’re talking to.

The Solution: Think Smaller 🤏

“What is this…copy for ants?!”

Yeah, that’s EXACTLY what this is. The smaller and more hyper-specific you can get on who your ideal client is, the more powerful your message (and the bigger chance that it actually lands with someone). When your ideal client feels like you understand them intimately, including all their quirks, struggles, and vibe, then they’re not just reading your copy. They’re falling in love 💘 and getting ready to buy 💳

Hyper-specificity is the secret to turning “meh” copy into absolutely mind-blowing, magnetic messaging. It’s the difference between “Idk, I guess this could work…” and “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!”

Let’s Fix Some Boring, Bland “Dream” Clients

To show you how it’s done, I’ve taken three of the most generic “dream client” descriptions out there and transformed them into microscopic dream clients.

My Dream Client is…Moms

Seriously? Like you and EVERYONE else has ‘moms’ as their dream clients. I mean, I get it, ‘mom’s is a huge market, so it’s understandable that you want to target moms as your client, but when you don’t drill down to hyperfocus on the exact type of mom you want to work with, then this just turns into a traffic jam. Let’s get more specific.

My dream client is moms who cringe at being called ‘mama’ and would rather die than join a Facebook group.

Okay, NOW we’re talking because you are speaking the exact language of this particular mom. This mom is edgy, no-nonsense, and know exactly who she is (and isn’t). With this level of specificity, your copy feels like it’s written just for her (and she loves that you understand her!).

My Dream Client is…Wedding Photographers

Yawn, I’m bored already. 🥱 In an industry that’s saturated by beige, a broad niche just isn’t gonna cut it. If you want to stand out, you’re going to have to add some color to your ideal client.

My dream client is…adventurous wedding photographers who are ready to hike, swim, and climb their way to the perfect shot.

Ugh, I LOVE this because I can picture this exact, specific photographer, and she’s just incredible ⛰️📸 You’re not just appealing to wedding photographers in general, but you’re calling out the ones who are outdoorsy, creative, and so obsessed with their clients that they’re willing to risk life and limb to bring them their DREAM wedding photos (okay, but who IS this girl because let’s be friends??!). When they see themselves in your copy, they’re gonna be HOOKED.

My Dream Client is…Small Business Owners

Ugh, I just can’t with this one 🙃 If you’re targeting “small business owners” in general, I can guarantee that you’re not having any fun OR attracting the right type of clients (are you attracting any clients with this bland dream client copy??!). This is the most tired ‘niche’, so if I catch this on your website, I’m gonna call you out on it! I know that some of those small business owners are NOT your vibe, so let’s narrow it down a bit.

My dream client is…ADHD business owners who collect planners but can’t remember where the FUCK they put them.

Sooo much better. Specific and a little spicy 🌶️ Now you’re speaking not just to the clients who get you, but the clients who NEED you.

Why This Works

By getting hyper-focused, you’re not just describing a broad demographic of hypothetical clients, but you’re talking directly to a REAL person, with real problems who needs your help. When your copy is hyper-focused on this one real, specific person, your ideal client feels seen and understood on such a deep level. They trust you. They connect with you. And guess what? They’re waaay more likely to work with you 💸

Ready to Give Your Ideal Client a Makeover?

If your website copy is feeling ho-hum, lukewarm, or straight-up boring as hell, it’s because your dream client isn’t specific enough. Let’s change that.
